In Gattaca, parents designed their children's genes the way you'd spec out a custom order. Audiences left the theater unsettled. Apparently, Silicon Valley's top AI investors left inspired.

First came better schools, better tutors, better networks, better internships. Now the competition is moving upstream. Mother Jones reports that Peter Thiel, Sam Altman, Brian Armstrong, and Marc Andreessen are backing gene-editing startups tied to the dream of “optimized” children. The story sounds futuristic, but the instinct behind it is very familiar: parents and power players trying to buy a head start before the race even begins.

AI is changing how the elite think about intelligence. Once machines can reason, write, code, diagnose, and strategize at scale, human intelligence starts looking like scarce infrastructure. Something to protect. Something to compound. Something to engineer earlier and earlier. The optimistic reading is that this forces a bigger cultural conversation, because the future will not be shaped only by smarter models. It will also be shaped by what we decide counts as a better human.

"The race for intelligence now has two tracks: one runs on silicon, the other on DNA. The same investors are funding both."

/ THE DEEP DIVE

Anthropic's AI Agents Closed 186 Deals in One Week With Zero Human Input

Anthropic built a private marketplace called Project Deal where AI agents handled both sides of every transaction: listing, negotiating in natural language, and closing, all across parallel Slack channels with no human sign-off at any step. Across 500+ listed items, agents completed $4,000 in total volume. The critical finding: agents on Anthropic's frontier Opus model fetched $3.64 more per item than those on the smaller Haiku model. A lab-grown ruby sold for $65 under Opus, $35 under Haiku. Participants on the weaker model had no idea they were losing out. Satisfaction scores were identical. Aggressive negotiation prompts made zero measurable difference. Only model quality moved the needle.

BUSINESS IMPACT:

Payments Infrastructure:
Negotiation, pricing, and checkout collapse into an agent layer operating at machine speed, forcing processors and acquirers to rebuild around autonomous software buyers.

Merchants & Platforms:
Nearly 80% of acquirers claim agentic readiness, but few merchants deliver consistent cross-channel payment experiences, the exact prerequisite agents need to operate.

AI Model Providers:
Frontier model access becomes a direct commercial weapon. The stronger model extracts more value per deal, and the losing side never knows.
