In The Matrix, you could download the skills when you needed them. AI is beginning to do something similar with software.

Ben Zhang lost his phone at the office and found that corporate device management (MDM) had disabled Find My. He asked Claude for another route. Claude suggested measuring the phone's Bluetooth signal strength and generated a small macOS meter in roughly a minute. Zhang walked around with his laptop, followed the stronger readings, and found the phone near his workstation.

Building custom software for a single annoyance was never worth the hours it took, so we all learned to live with small inconveniences. That trade just moved. When a working tool costs a minute instead of an afternoon, problems that were too specific to bother solving become solvable on the spot, one person at a time. The software industry was built to serve problems large enough for many people to share. A great deal of daily friction was never that large.

"Software used to be written for the many. The next wave gets written for the one, in the moment the problem appears."

Google Ships the First Sign-Language AI in a Consumer Product, Trained on 100,000+ Hours

Google DeepMind's SL2T model gives Deaf and hard of hearing users a way to sign into their phones instead of typing, reading simultaneous hand, body, and facial movements and turning them into English text in real time. Launching on the Pixel 11 inside Gboard and Live Transcribe at no extra cost, it lets users sign to search, message, edit documents, or prompt Gemini.

BUSINESS IMPACT:

Assistive Technology:
A mainstream phone maker embedding sign-language transcription pressures dedicated accessibility-device firms to justify standalone hardware.

Smartphone Makers:
Sign-to-text becomes a competitive accessibility feature Apple and Samsung will be pushed to match across their own platforms.

Communication & Translation Services:
Real-time sign-to-text at consumer scale threatens the market for human ASL interpreters in routine digital interactions.
