Substantial Innovation Requires Substantial Investment

Your weekly briefing on all things AI

Could tech giants be willing to risk everything for AI, seeing it as their only path to future relevance?

Advancing AI technology requires substantial expenditure on top-notch equipment and skilled experts, but the cost of a competitor developing their AI first is even greater. This occurs at every level of business, but for Big Tech leaders, it feels like an "all or nothing" approach, and their spending reflects that mindset.

Is OpenAI About to Hit $100 Billion Valuation? Nvidia and Apple Could Make It Happen

Nvidia and Apple are reportedly in discussions to participate in OpenAI’s upcoming fundraising round, which is rumored to value the ChatGPT developer at $100 billion. Thrive Capital, an existing investor in OpenAI, may lead the round, with Microsoft —currently holding a 49% stake in the company— also expected to participate. It’s worth noting that Nvidia’s interest could stem from OpenAI being a crucial customer of theirs, and Apple could be relying on OpenAI for the success of their “Apple Intelligence” initiatives.

Despite generating an estimated $3.4 billion in revenue earlier this year, OpenAI is projected to lose $5 billion by the end of the year due to its rapid expansion in AI training and staffing. This potential funding round highlights the significant interest from leading tech companies in strengthening their positions within the rapidly advancing field of generative AI. (Link)

🏩 Healthcare

AI-Driven Bioacoustics Transform Disease Detection

Generative AI is revolutionizing bioacoustics by enhancing disease detection through sound analysis. Google’s HeAR (Health Acoustic Representations) AI model, trained on 300 million audio samples, is now utilized in India to detect tuberculosis (TB) by analyzing cough patterns via smartphones. Collaborating with Hyderabad’s Salcit Technologies, the AI tool, combined with Salcit’s Swaasa app, offers a cost-effective and portable screening solution with 94% accuracy. This approach aims to reach underserved populations where traditional diagnostics are scarce. Additionally, Google is exploring ultrasound-based AI for early breast cancer detection in Taiwan. Despite challenges like background noise and technology adoption in rural areas, these advancements promise to democratize disease screening and make healthcare more accessible globally. (Link)

🏠 Real Estate

AI-Enhanced Real Estate Platform Landian Launches Amid Industry Shake-Up

Landian, a new real estate startup, has launched with a fresh approach to home buying, spearheaded by Bryan Galen, Neal Batra, and Josh Sitzer. Sitzer, known for his landmark Sitzer/Burnett commission lawsuit, founded Landian to address frustrations over traditional commission fees. The platform allows buyers to access real estate services on a pay-as-you-go basis, offering home tours and offer-preparation for flat fees rather than through standard commission structures. As an example, customers can pay $99 for an AI-powered offer preparation session. This model responds to recent industry changes following the lawsuit, which eliminated mandatory buyer broker compensation from MLS listings. Operating across the U.S. and Canada, Landian is currently self-funded and is preparing for its first seed funding round. By minimizing the need for traditional agents through its platform, Landian could fundamentally change how real estate professionals operate. (Link)

📝 Prompt Tip of the Week: Use Screenshots

Creating web experiences with a screenshot:

Claude is a powerful AI tool that can help you create custom “artifacts” or publishable experiences for your business. Many people are so used to the simple chat feature, that they forget that most AI models are multimodal thereby underutilizing their capabilities. Giving Claude or ChatGPT a screenshot to work off of, greatly improves their fidelity to your vision.

Simply take a picture of the page you want to replicate or modify, and upload it to Claude.

A few tips for the best results:

  • Ensure that the artifacts feature is enabled in your settings.

  • Use an image that is clear and well-lit.

  • Try 2-3 times before giving up on a particular prompt (can sometimes take a few tries).
