Figma Hits Pause on AI Design Tool After Accusations of Mimicking Apple's Weather App

Figma CEO Dylan Field has decided to temporarily shut down its "Make Design" AI feature after accusations surfaced that it was creating designs that closely resembled Apple's Weather app. The concerns were first highlighted by Andy Allen, who tested the tool and raised alarms about potential similarities. The feature, unveiled at Figma's recent Config conference, was meant to help users quickly generate UI layouts by simply describing what they needed.

However, its launch sparked debates among designers about the risks of unintentional plagiarism and the impact on job roles in the industry. Field admitted that there had been a lapse in quality control, blaming it on the underlying design systems. Figma plans to bring back the feature once they've thoroughly checked and fixed the issues. Apple Gets a Seat At OpenAI’s Table

While Apple did not get a full seat on OpenAI's board, reports indicate that as a part of their recent partnership they got a non-voting observer position.

Here are the key details:

  1. Phil Schiller, Apple's App Store chief and longtime executive team member, is expected to represent Apple in this observer role later this year.

  2. As an observer, Schiller will be able to attend board meetings but will not have voting rights or serve as a director.

  3. This arrangement is similar to Microsoft's position on OpenAI's board. Microsoft, which has invested about $13 billion in OpenAI, also holds a non-voting observer seat.

  4. The observer role allows Apple to gain insights into OpenAI's operations, potentially facilitating the integration of AI technologies into Apple's products and services.

  5. This development comes after Apple and OpenAI announced a partnership last month to integrate ChatGPT into Apple's operating systems.

This arrangement suggests potential deeper integration of OpenAI's technologies into Apple's products and services, which could significantly impact consumer technology in the coming years. It also raises questions about how Apple and Microsoft will navigate their roles as both partners and competitors within OpenAI's governance structure. (Link)
