Adobe Staff Worry Their AI Could Kill the Jobs of Their Own Customers

When Adobe introduced its text-to-image generator Firefly, it was seen as a game-changer in the realm of graphic design. Input text, get a graphic. Simple, right? And in the context of the AI revolution, it seemed like the next logical step.

But here's the plot twist: by making design faster and easier, Firefly is reducing the need for human designers. That's a problem in a world where Adobe's software is primarily bought by human designers.

As AI takes center stage in tech innovation, Adobe's own AI might be threatening its customer base and, by extension, its revenue stream.

Firefly's effectiveness led to companies downsizing their design departments, and Adobe's own employees started worrying about job security.

Despite the concerns, Adobe's president of digital media, David Wadhwani, remains optimistic. He argues that Adobe has a history of introducing technologies that increase productivity and create jobs. But how this will pan out with their current AI advancements remains to be seen. (Full Article)

Meta’s AudioCraft: A New Muse or Just Noise?

Meta is the latest to join the text-to-music fray. Their AudioCraft comprises three models. MusicGen, trained on 20,000 hours of music, AudioGen, trained on public sound effect like barking dogs or footsteps, and an enhanced version of Meta’s EnCodec decoder allows users to create sounds with minimal artifacts, reducing audio manipulation.

Electronic audio has been a playground for musicians for decades, but AI-generated music creates sounds from text prompts and a vast library of sound data, offering a new dimension to music creation.

At present, AudioCraft's output might be more suited for elevator music or stock songs, but Meta envisions its new model as a game-changer, akin to how synthesizers revolutionized music.

"We think MusicGen can turn into a new type of instrument — just like synthesizers when they first appeared," Meta stated in a blog post. However, the company acknowledges the challenges in creating AI models capable of making music, given the complexity of audio data compared to written text.

It will be interesting to see how the evolution of these “artistic” technologies impact our culture, and the job security of the already starving artists. Many artists are lawyering up, while others like Grimes, have put out statements encouraging people using AI to replicate their voices. (Full Article)
