MANAGING PARTNER

Every heist movie has the same setup: one mastermind, a team of specialists, each the best at exactly one thing. Perplexity just cast 19 AI models in the roles.

Perplexity launched Computer this week, a system that breaks a single user request into subtasks and dispatches them across 19 specialized AI models simultaneously. Claude Opus handles reasoning. GPT-5.2 runs web search. Grok picks up lightweight tasks. Veo processes video. Each job runs in its own sandbox, and the system can operate autonomously for days or months without supervision. CEO Aravind Srinivas framed the pitch with a Steve Jobs quote about playing the orchestra, then took a pointed shot at Anthropic, saying the biggest weakness of Claude is that it only coworks with Claude.

The move reframes what an AI platform is selling. For two years, the industry treated model superiority as the competitive advantage. Perplexity is arguing the opposite: that no single model wins every task, and the real value sits in the orchestration layer that knows which model to call and when. If that thesis holds, the moat shifts from who built the best model to who built the best routing system, and the entire landscape of AI tooling reorganizes around it.

"The company that wins AI may not build the best model. It may build the best switchboard."

Block Cuts 40% of Its Workforce — and Predicts Most Companies Will Follow Within a Year

Jack Dorsey's Block — parent of Square, Cash App, and Afterpay — is cutting over 4,000 employees, shrinking from 10,000 to just under 6,000. The reason: AI tools are now outperforming larger teams. Block's financials are healthy — Q4 gross profit hit $2.87 billion, up 24% year-over-year — making this a strategic reset, not a rescue. Dorsey built internal AI tool Goose to power the leaner model, and chose a single decisive cut over gradual reductions to protect morale and trust. Block's stock jumped 24% on the news. Dorsey's warning to the rest of the corporate world: "I think most companies are late. Within the next year, I believe the majority will reach the same conclusion."

BUSINESS IMPACT:

Fintech Competitors:
Block's new target — $2M+ gross profit per employee — forces rivals like PayPal and Stripe to justify their headcount.

Public Companies:
A 24% stock reward gives boards everywhere a powerful incentive to accelerate AI-driven restructuring.

HR & Workforce Tech:
Demand surges for reskilling and outplacement platforms as AI-justified cuts spread beyond tech.
